Frequently Asked Questions

Why do tankless propane water heaters fail in winter when connected to 100 lb tanks?

Residential gas tankless water heaters require an enormous instantaneous flow of 160,000 to 199,000 BTU/hr to heat incoming freezing ground water. When ambient temperatures drop to 20°F or lower, a single 100 lb cylinder at 20% fill can only naturally boil off 115,000 BTU/hr (dropping to 78,000 BTU/hr at 0°F). The sudden massive demand causes tank pressure to drop below the required 10–11 inches Water Column, triggering error codes (like Rinnai Code 11/12 or Navien E003 flame failure).

What is the difference between an Integral Two-Stage and a Separate Two-Stage regulator?

An Integral Two-Stage Regulator combines both high-pressure (10 PSI) and low-pressure (11" WC) stages into a single compact housing mounted directly at the tank. It is ideal for short runs (under 30 to 45 feet) with loads up to 450,000–900,000 BTU/hr. A Separate Two-Stage System mounts a red 1st stage regulator (10 PSI) at the tank, runs a smaller, economical 10 PSI copper or CSST line over long distances, and places a green 2nd stage regulator (11" WC) right at the building wall to eliminate line pressure drop.

Can I use an automatic changeover regulator with two 100 lb cylinders?

An automatic changeover regulator draws from only ONE tank at a time until it is empty, then flips to the reserve tank. While this ensures continuous fuel, it does NOT double your vaporization rate. If you have high BTU loads (such as a 199k BTU water heater in freezing weather), both tanks must be connected with a tee manifold and both valves left OPEN simultaneously so the liquid surface area of both cylinders is combined.
